Olympian Diane Modahl to attend Two Cities Boat Race

Diane Modahl - former Olympic athlete and star of I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! - will be a VIP guest at the 37th Two Cities Boat Race on Saturday 10 May.

She will join thousands of spectators on the banks of Salford Quays to cheer on the teams at the annual Salford v Manchester University rowing contest.

Originally from Manchester, Diane began her athletic career with Sale Harriers. She went on to win three Commonwealth Games medals, including gold at the 1990 championships in New Zealand. The 800m champion has also competed at the Olympic Games four times.

Diane said: "I'm really looking forward to coming along and watching the boat race at Salford Quays this year. I imagine that the atmosphere will be incredible.

"Taking part in sport is a great experience and I wish the very best of luck to both university teams and to the dragon boat crews."

Diane took part in series three of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, in 2004, alongside eventual winner Kerry Katona, punk legend John Lydon and showbiz couple Jordan (Katie Price) and Peter André.

The Two Cities Boat Race will see both university rowing clubs going head-to-head along the River Irwell on Saturday 10 May 2008. For the second year, the official charity for the event will be children's medical research charity, SPARKS.

Admission to the Two Cities Boat Race is free.

Distributed Learning in the Defense Department: Rule of Thirds

According to a recent press release, a Defense Department online course is completed every seven seconds. Their Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative has grown significantly in the past decade.

Following to the "rule of thirds" they've been able to save time and money by switching to the online class format:

"You can save money by a third, and then either improve performance by a third or reduce time by a third - either one, but not both," Mr. Wisher said.

The Defense Acquisition University at Fort Belvoir, Va., for example, spent $500,000 to convert its traditional defense acquisition course to a self-paced course offered through ADL. Instead of spending nine days in a resident course, plus two travel days getting to and from Fort Belvoir, students take a 25-hour online course "on their time, when they can do it," Mr. Jesukiewicz said.

The conversion offered other payoffs, too, he said. The course can now accommodate 14,000 to 15,000 students a year, not the previous 3,000. And it's cheaper for the Defense Department to maintain the course - $1.5 million a year vs. $6 million for traditional training.

Mr. Wisher doesn't predict any end to traditional resident military training, but said ADL offers a promising alternative or addition."

It's encouraging that many institutions are able to provide online training at a reduced cost. However, saving time and money should not be the ultimate goals of educational programs. Hopefully everyone will keep this in mind as online training programs grow.

Jesus of Nazareth and Holby City star Robert Powell will return to his birthplace on Saturday 10 May as a VIP guest at the 37th Two Cities Boat Race - the annual Salford v Manchester University rowing contest.

The distinguished Salford-born actor has supported the boat race over the past couple of years, and the involvement of official charity SPARKS, of which he is vice-president.

Robert said: "I'm looking forward to attending the big race on the day itself this year, but I'm keeping it secret which of my home city universities I'll be cheering for. Let's just say that I hope the best crew on the day pull it off, and that there's a huge crowd to enjoy the fun and raise as much money as possible for SPARKS' medical research mission.

"I'm also delighted that the very important research project into pre-eclampisa that SPARKS is funding in Manchester is making significant progress."

The Two Cities Boat Race will see both university rowing clubs going head to head along the River Irwell on Saturday 10 May 2008 - with thousands of spectators lining the banks of Salford Quays to watch the fiercely contested races.

An honorary graduate of the University of Salford and graduate of Manchester, Robert Powell also spoke of his pleasure at supporting both institutions, as well as the official charity. He said: "I have close links with both universities and SPARKS is a charity that is extremely important to me. The money raised will make an invaluable contribution to medical research, helping to give children the best start in life. I am delighted to be a part of this fantastic event."

Olympic sports psychologist gives Salford rowing team a boost

Rowers in the University of Salford's Boat Club are getting the upper hand on their Manchester rivals ahead of the Two Cities Boat Race on 10 May - by employing the services of a top sports psychologist.

Dr Tom Fawcett of the University's School of Health Care Professions, who has worked with the British Olympic teams since 1992, has been helping the crews mentally prepare and build up their mental toughness so they can beat the Manchester team.

Techniques Dr Fawcett will be identifying important competitive distractions on the day and how to deal with them, and establishing a code of conduct for team cohesion on event day.

"In rowing, the most important thing is team work," he said. "I've interviewed elite rowers before and they've told me they need to be completely focussed on their rhythm during the race and that requires effective teamwork and collective focus.

"With the Salford crew I'll also be working on using their nervous energy before the race to make them more motivated. If they apply my techniques they've got a good chance of improving their performance and hopefully winning the race."

Hannah Cumming, the women's team captain said: "The techniques Tom has offered us are just what we need in our preparation. Personally he's helped me lose my nervousness before races and all of us in the team are definitely more focussed on our goal of beating Manchester.

"I don't want to go into too much detail about what we've learnt though, as we'll lose our advantage!"

Sports travel leader backs University Boat Race

The Universities of Manchester and Salford will go head to head in the 37th Two Cities Boat Race on Saturday 10 May at Salford Quays. Using Wikis in Education

According to Wikipedia, a wiki is: "software that allows registered users or anyone to collaboratively create, edit, link, and organize the content of a website, usually for reference material." Many online teachers have found that wikis are an excellent tool for connecting students and distributing information. In fact, a new no-cost wiki ebook shares several success stories about wikis used in education.

Here's what's in the book:

Critic out of jail and speaking at Salford University

Peter Tatchell, the human rights activist who was arrested after ambushing the Olympic torch parade in London this month, is speaking about human rights law at Salford University on Wednesday 23 April starting at 6.00pm.

Peter, who once attempted a citizen's arrest on Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on charges of torture, will argue that existing international laws are not readily enforced, and fail to deter tyrannical leaders in countries such as Zimbabwe and China.

Peter said: "By ambushing the Olympic torch parade I wanted to highlight both China's reputation in Tibet and the thousands of political prisoners held in Chinese jails. The human rights abuses in countries like Iraq, Zimbabwe, Tibet, China, Iran and Darfur are going unpunished. This gives a green light to tyrants everywhere."

Peter has campaigned for over 40 years on issues of democracy, civil liberties, peace and global justice. He was listed as one of the top 50 'Good' people in Britain in 2006 by The Independent and voted as the sixth greatest 'Hero of our Time' by readers of the New Statesmen in the same year.

He continued: "The main abusers of human rights are heads of state that have been granted sovereign immunity from prosecution. This immunity must be removed if human rights law is to act as a deterrent against such violations and if tyrants like President Mugabe are to be brought to justice.

"One of the great challenges of the 21st century is to secure universal enforcement of the already existing body of international human rights law. What we really need now is a new comprehensive UN human rights convention."

Rowing rivals get stuck in with pre-race acupuncture

Old rivals from Salford University and Manchester University rowing teams have been receiving complementary therapies including acupuncture, reflexology and aromatherapy massage to enhance their training ahead of the Two Cities Boat Race on May 10 at Salford Quays.

The historic race is fiercely competitive with both teams turning to treatments at Salford University's Complementary and Alternative Therapy Clinic to ensure they are in top health for the tough day of competition next month.

Mae Xing, acupuncture practitioner said: "The rowers have received treatments to help them relax as well as pain relief for aching muscles. The acupuncture will help them to become more focussed on winning without becoming stressed or anxious."

As runners-up last time, Salford has more to prove this year. Captain of Salford University Women's Rowing team, Hannah Cumming said: "It's great that we have been able to use such expert treatments, it has made me even more determined to win this year."

"I have actually had acupuncture before and it really does work. It's not painful, in fact it is really relaxing," added Veronica Wood, President of Manchester University Rowing club.

Visiting the clinic has proved a popular way to relax amidst the teams' training schedule which has become tougher with only one month until race day. "Coming to the clinic is really relaxing. Having acupuncture has helped me as I pulled a muscle in my shoulder two weeks ago, it now feels much better", said Hannah.

The two universities will be battling it out from 2.30pm on Saturday 10 May, with dragon boat racing to take part from 10.30am for staff, students and the public.

Professors Boycotting Academic Journals

Over the past few years, there has been a huge push towards making educational information freely available online. In most cases, the results have been extremely advantageous for online learners who do not always have access to university-level libraries.

Now, some professors are advocating to make academic journals publicly available. In a nutshell: university faculty regularly publish articles in academic journals as a requirement of their position. Students regularly need access to the information in these journals for papers and other research projects.

Those who do not have access to a university library may find it difficult to find these articles elsewhere. They may have to pay for an article service or purchase each article a la carte - both options are pricey and are not always available.

Academic Danah Boyd is currently boycotting academic journals by publishing in open-access journals instead - and she's encouraging her peers to do the same. Here's what she has to say:

"I'd be sad to see some of the academic publishers go, but if they can't evolve to figure out new market options, I have no interest in supporting their silencing practices. I think that scholars have a responsibility to make their work available as a public good. I believe that scholars should be valued for publishing influential material that can be consumed by anyone who might find it relevant to their interests. I believe that the product of our labor should be a public good. I do not believe that scholars should be encouraged to follow stupid rules for the sake of maintaining norms."
